Vocal types of children with high risk of cerebral palsy before 17 months of age

The purpose of this study is to investigate early phonetic patterns and characteristics in 4 infants with high risk of cerebral palsy (CP) with protophone (Oller, 2000) codings. Recordings at either home or hospital from each infant before 17 months of age were selected for analysis. Six vocal types (Buder, Warlaumont, & Oller, 2013), vowel, growl, squeal, cry, laugh and others, were utilized to categorize those utterances based on subjective judgement of a trained coder. Major findings are: 1) The ratio of squeal to growl was generally higher in most recording samples; 2) Squeal with the feature of raucous was found frequently in two infants; 3) The distribution of vocal types in infants with risk of cerebral palsy around one year of age presents the similar tendency: others > vowel > squeal > growl. Although individual differences affect the results, the preliminary discovering tries to show the induction of vocalization feature in infants with high risk of CP under six types of protophones. More data and analysis are required to establish the profile of early phonetic patterns of children with CP.
