The Other in Vietnam War: A Korean pastor's Thought of Anti-war in the Memoirs of the Vietnam War

This article focuses on the Vietnam War memoir "War is Cruel: Love and Peace (four volumes)" written by Mr. Jeong Myung-seok (1945- ), who is the founder of the Christian Gospel Missionary Church. We will observe his participation as a Korean Private soldier twice in Vietnam War. His record focuses on his reflection on the so-called "frames of war" from his East Asian perspective. As a third-party "other" who came to the Vietnam battlefield, Jeong Myung-seok went beyond the framework of war which was instilled in him by the state under the Cold War ideology at the time when he participated in the war. As a Private soldier, Jeong Myung-seok's memories fully express how they were mercilessly enslaved by the frame of war, but they are powerless. They can only express the most helpless sorrow and protest against the war through the writing of words, as well as their tears and sad sighs of the passing of young lives. From the standpoint of the Private soldier, Jeong Myung-seok not only recalls the tragedies on the battlefield in the book, but also sharply criticizes those who triggered the war and the so-called war heroes. And through various concrete examples and battlefield stories, he reflects on and criticizes various absurdities and the wrong framework of binary opposition and the distinction between ourselves and the enemy in the war. From this, we try to get rid of the frame of war left to us by the century of war.
