During the Pacific War, Malaya was under Japanese rule. In Pengerang area of Johor, the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) has become active here since 1943, engaging in various of distraction and deception, propaganda and sabotage actions behind the enemy lines. After the end of the war in 1945, MPAJA took over the Pengerang area from the surrendered Japanese troops, and carried out substantial governance until the end of 1945. This article reviews the deeds of MPAJA in Pengerang from the Japanese occupation period to the early days of the liberation, and discusses the influence of this particular history on the overall situation of the anti-Japanese war as well as post-war governance issue in this region.
