Two system of streets names coexisted in George Town, Penang for over a hundred years-that are official proclamation's name and the name usage by the Chinese society. The later should deem as an organic combination which kept the memories of the city among the Chinese in Penang. The purpose of this study is to explore the cognition of Chinese towards the space of George Town. The research arises the concept of "George Town-centric" by studying the Chinese streets' name. The paper argues that the Chinese stood in the centre of George Town and gave the name to other places, including Province Wellesley from the stood at the centre of George Town. This aims of paper are including: First, compare the verbal Chinese naming system in 19^(th) century and today's usage. Besides, the paper also intend to draw out the urban areas and urban-rural divide of early Chinese society in Penang. Second, the research aims to support the "Georgetown-Centric" which argue in this paper.
