Mandarin is the common language for Malaysian Chinese. As a regional Mandarin, it is a variant of the global Chinese language, which also constitutes a member of the Greater Mandarin that includes Putonghua of Mainland China, Taiwan's Guoyu and such. Therefore, the study of Malaysian Mandarin should also encompass, besides a synchronic comparison among different Mandarins, a diachronic study of the history of its formation. This paper begins by examining the usage of the term Huayu (means Mandarin) in Malaysia context, thereby deriving an appropriate positioning of Malaysian Mandarin study, whence following an analysis of relevant materials, manifests the full amplitude of Malaysian Mandarin study within the synchronic and diachronic scope of linguistic study, and concludes a directional opinion on the development of the Malaysian Mandarin study. This paper proposes the research on Malaysia Mandarin needs to be integrated into the broader scope of Chinese linguistic study, both illustrating the diversities of different regional Mandarins on the synchronic scope, and the manifold developments in the formation of modern Mandarin on the diachronic scope.
