Effects of dietary turmeric powder supplement on performance, egg quality, and bone characteristics in second-cycle laying hens

Osteoporosis is frequently observed in laying hens particularly during the second laying stage of egg production. The prevention and treatment measures may accompany changes in the laying performance and egg quality. Turmeric powder (TP), rich with curcumin, has been shown to reduce bone loss and enhance bone mineralization; however, the beneficial effect of TP on the egg industry remains to be learned. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of TP on bone characteristics, laying performance, and egg quality, in the second phase of laying hens. A total 120 of 90-week-old laying hens were randomly allocated into twelve pens with three dietary treatments: control diet, control diet supplemented with 0.4% TP, and with 0.6% TP. Ten hens were housed in 4 m^2 floor pens with set nests for 16 weeks. Egg production was recorded every day and 2 eggs per pen were randomly collected every 4 weeks for analysis of egg quality. Two birds per pen were randomly selected and sacrificed for tibia collection after blood sampling at the end of the trial. Results showed that dietary supplementation of 0.4% TP tended to improve the bone strength but reduce the egg shell strength and the tibia P content at the end of trail (P < 0.10). Serum Ca and P concentration remained unchanged. Supplementation of 0.4 and 0.6% TP affected litter on the laying performance, but all significantly enhanced the yolk Roche yolk color fan score, Hunter a*, and b* when comparing to the control (P < 0.05). The yolk curcuminoid concentration was increased (P < 0.01) and yolk malondialdehyde level (P = 0.08) was decreased by TP supplementation. It is concluded that, in the second-cycle laying hens, both 0.4 and 0.6% TP supplementation affected little on the bone characteristics, shell strength, and laying performance, but significantly increased the yolk redness, yellowness and curcuminoid content. As noted, supplementation of 0.4% TP might exert an opposite effect on bone and egg shell strength, indicating a repartition mechanism, but it requires furthers confirmation.
