Introduction: Erector spinae is not only a part of core muscle, but a vital muscle that make table tennis players keep trunk steady to response for defending counterstroke or smashing for goal. In this pilot study, the effects of Flexi-bar training on muscle tone of erector spinae and functional performance were examined, and the low back pain resulted from overuse of erector spinae was discussed. Method: The second division of college players were recruited. With holding the Flexi-bar by one or two hands, the college players shook the Flexi-bar under the postures of core training. The training was 30 minute per day, 5 times per week, for 2 weeks. The difficulty level increased by time. After 10-day training, the Myoton was used to measure the muscle tension of erector spinae, and the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) was used to evaluate functional performance and sport injuries. The difference before and after the Flexi-bar training as well as the difference between dominance and non-dominance were tested. Results & Conclusion: The muscle tension of erector spinae decreased after Flexi-bar training regardless of dominance side (pre 17.04±0.99, post 16.41±1.23) or non-dominance side (pre 16.80±1.26, post 16.33±1.72). As to FMS, the testing item of rotation stability was improved (pre 1.33±0.47, post 1.67±0.47). Furthermore, the summed score of FMS was more than 14 after training (pre 11.67±0.94, post 14.33±0.47), meaning decreased risk of sport injuries. Based on the results of this pilot study, the Flexi-bar training may play a positive effect on muscle tension of erector spinae and functional performance as well as decreasing the risk of sport injuries. Therefore, the intervention of Flexi-bar may enhance the strength of core muscle and prevent the low back pain caused by excessive exercise.
