With governments increasingly implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies, developing environmentally friendly Radio Access Networks (RANs) has emerged as a significant future trend in the telecommunications industry. Given that local microgrids are often situated at base station sites and serve as direct power sources, adopting RANs powered primarily by renewable energy sources becomes increasingly viable as RAN architecture becomes more centralized and energy-efficient 5G equipment matures. In this paper, we present an analysis of a net-zero strategy that can serve as a reference for telecommunications operators. Additionally, we introduce a conceptual framework for integrating RANs and microgrids. This framework aims to seamlessly merge RAN intelligent controllers (RIC) on the RAN side with energy management systems (EMS) on the grid side. Through this integration, the behavior of both base stations and the grid can be mutually controlled using advanced technology, all while optimizing operations in alignment with the telecommunications operator's strategic objectives.
