George Spalatin was a close friend and advisor to Martin Luther and had a major influence on the advancement of the Reformation. Spalatin was deeply influenced by humanism in his early years, and later entered the court of the Elector and was trusted by him. His friendship with Luther was crucial to the success of the Reformation, and Spalatin used the influence that came with his work to politically protect Luther and ensure that the Reformation would continue. At the same time, Spalatin was an important transmitter of Luther's ideas and organizer of the new church. Although his scholarly and political contributions have not been sufficiently emphasized in Chinese and English-speaking academia, much research has been done in German-speaking academia. This article provides a brief overview of Spalatin's past research, biography, political involvement, and his interactions with Luther, in the hope of enhancing the academy's understanding of and attention to this important figure of the Reformation period.
