This thesis is divided into two parts: the first half is a translation of the script of Machinal, and the second half is an analysis of the work. Machinal is an expressionist play based on the true story of the Ruth Snyder murder case in the United States in the 1920s, which caused a social uproar. In contrast to the mainstream media's biased coverage of female murderers at the time, the playwright attempts to explore the complexities behind the case and the impact of social institutions, work environments, family relationships and mass media on individuals through the creation of the play. The analysis of the work covers the historical background of the play, the biography of the playwright, the script analysis, translation discussion, and the history of stage performances. Through reviewing, collating, and analyzing relevant research materials, I aim to present the cultural value and historical significance of the play.
