Bacillus licheniformis-fermented products (BLFP) is one of probiotics proven to improve growth performance with antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory abilities. The aims of this study were to compare the fecal microbiota of cats with chronic diarrhea (n=8) with that of healthy cats (n=4) from the same household by next generation sequencing (NGS) and the evaluate effectiveness of oral administration of BLFP on relieving the clinical sings and altering the intestinal microbiota in diarrheal cats. Six out of the 8 diarrheal cats showed clinical improvement on fecal condition after BLFP administration for 7 days. Among the 6 cats, the stool condition became normal in 2 cats. A higher Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was noted in the feces of diarrheal cats as compared with those in the control healthy cats and in the diarrheal cats with clinical improvement after having BLFP as compared with these in the diarrheal cats without clinical improvement. The phylum Bacteroidetes and class Bacteroidia decreased significantly in the diarrheal cats regardless of the administration of BLFP. Blautia spp., Ruminococcus torques, and Ruminococcus gnavus, which belong to the Clostridium cluster XIVa and have been reported beneficial to the intestinal health increased significantly in the feces after BLFP treatment. Furthermore, a significant decrease of Clostridium perfringens was also noted in diarrheal cats after BLFP administration. Overall, BLFP could be a potential probiotic to relieve GI signs and improve fecal microbiota in chronic diarrheal cats.
