Colonial Japanese Literature of Interracial Marriages between Japanese and Taiwanese / Japanese and Korean

During the Second World War, Taiwan and Korea ( Joseon, 朝鮮) were both under Japanese rule. Although the duration of their colonization differed, the Japanese government pursued an assimilation policy in both regions. This policy was reflected in slogans such as "Integration of Japan and Taiwan "(内台融合)and " Japan and Korea as one"(内鮮一体).Additionally, legislation such as "Nai-Tai marriage" (内台共婚) — referring to interracial marriages between Japanese and Taiwanese — and "Nai-Seon marriage" (内鮮結婚) — referring to interracial marriages between Japanese and Korean — was introduced in Taiwan and Korea, respectively. In both Taiwan and Korea, literary works addressing themes of love and marriage gradually increased in response to this policy. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the author depicts the elements of "Nai-Tai marriage" and "Nai-Seon marriage" in the family relationships of characters in Japanese literary works set in colonial Taiwan and Korea, and to analyze the author’s creative intentions in depth. The research will be limited to six works that depict family relationships: "Madame Chen"(陳夫人)by Shoji Soichi, "Red Dates"(棗)by Yuasa Katsue, "Emotions"(感情) by Huang Bao-tou, " Yagukcho " (野菊抄)by Choe Jeong-hui, " A Raging Torrent "(奔流)by Wang Chang-xiong, and "Shell "(殻)by Jeong In-taek. As a research method, the study will select one work each by two Japanese male writers, two colonial female writers, and two colonial male writers. These works will be organized into three chapters by theme, with each chapter focusing on one Taiwanese work and one Korean work. Each work will be examined in detail through textual analysis. Chapter 1 focuses on the works of Japanese writers who had personal experience living in the colonies: " Madame Chen "(陳夫人)by Shoji Soichi, and " Red Dates "(棗)by Yuasa Katsue. By analyzing both the internal characteristics of the mothers' roles in these works and their external interactions with others, the chapter clarifies how the images of Japanese women who emigrated to the colonies are portrayed by these two authors. Chapter 2 focuses on the works of colonial female writers, "Emotions" (感情) by Huang Bao-tou and "Yagukcho" (野菊抄) by Choe Jeong-hui. It examines the significance of the common setting of " Men returning to the interior from the colonies " in both works, and how this setting affects the behavior of the mothers and the children’s sense of belonging, as well as the mother-child relationship. The chapter also reveals the authors' creative intentions in their works. Chapter 3 focuses on the works of colonial male writers: " A Raging Torrent "(奔流) by Wang Chang-xiong and "Shell "(殻)by Jeong In-taek. It examines the portrayal of Japanese wives of colonial men in these works, explores the conflicts between their colonial husbands and their own families of origin, and analyzes the symbolism of parent-child conflicts depicted in the texts. In recent years, academic research has increasingly focused on exploring the cultures and literatures of regions with shared historical experiences. This paper aims to enhance our understanding of how the theme of "marriage" was depicted in Japanese literature set in colonial Taiwan and colonial Korea during that period.
