This thesis aims to explore current cosplay activities that take place in Taiwan. The research is conducted by interviewing cosplayers, costume makers, audiences, event hosts, and animation fans so as to understand in depth about Taiwanese cosplay culture. The first chapter includes literature review and definition of cosplay related terms as well as its importance in cultural development. Chapter two investigates the process of cosplay subculture derived from fan culture so as to rein confirm the definition of cosplay. The third chapter focuses the history of cosplay development in Taiwan, discussing the motivation, psychological perspective, and relevant cosplay etiquettes. The forth chapter attempts to discover the unspoken rules of cosplay, the acceptance level of blackboard culture, and anti-mini-model phenomenon. The fifth chapter examines discrimination situation, cosplay certificates, and current policies related to cosplay development in Taiwan. The sixth chapter looks into how Taiwanese cosplay activities are related to Japanese culture. The analysis of this thesis suggests that the origin of cosplay begins from the repeated context reading and grows by absorbing new materials to create new elements in culture, which at the same time displays multiple reproduction of cultural contexts. The definition and reconfirmation of cosplay copy and intimate the context, but the imitated objects contain obvious referential elements. The motivation of Taiwanese cosplay results from the preference of certain art works. On the other hand, cosplay increases confidence, reduces pressure, avoiding getting lost in the contexts. Unspoken rules of Taiwanese cosplay regulate the minimum prerequisite of facial foundation, eyebrows painting, and a display of eye-lining. The understanding towards the original work is a must. The violation against the rules lead to public penalties on the blackboard. The interviews in this research reveals that the major discrimination against cosplay includes pornographically images, indecent minds, weird costumes and waste of financial resources. The preparation stage of cosplay acts focuses on the understanding of the original work. The acting stage mainly concentrates on gaining actual experiences. And the ending stage of a cosplay act lies upon the reflection of such exhibitive act. The cosplayers do not necessarily learn Japanese for the sake of cosplay activities. The future studies include the perspective of law in relation to cosplay activities in Taiwan as well as Taiwanese government attitude towards cosplay.
