Awareness of Cultural Differences and Identities of Taiwanese-Japanese Mixed Race Children

This study focused on seven Taiwanese-Japanese mixed race children aged around 20 to 30 who were born and raised in Taiwan or/and Japan. Through semi-structured life story interviews, I explored their experiences growing up in the two cultures and examined what kind of cultural differences they were aware of and how the cultural differences has caused change in their identities. According to the analysis, mixed race children who grew up in Taiwan or/and Japan have experienced various cultural differences during their growth, and their identities has also changed to varying degrees. The factors that lead to changes in identity include the identification card, place of living, surrounding perceptions, length of residence, and experience in using two languages. When Taiwanese-Japanese mixed race children experience culture shock to the other culture, their sense of belonging to that culture decreases. It is worth noting that five of the seven Taiwanese-Japanese mixed race children interviewed mentioned their mothers who were their main caregivers, so the main caregiver may have an impact on their identity construction.
