The aim of this study is to explore the relationships among parentification, self-differentiation, and intimacy in single, in single individuals. The subjects of this study are single, unmarried individuals aged 25 to 40 years old with romantic experience. Using convenience sampling, 372 valid questionnaires were collected for research analysis. The research tools include the “Parentification Scale,” “Chinese Version of the Differentiation of Self Inventory (C-DSI),” and the “Intimacy Scale.” Statistical methods such as descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, Pearson’s product-moment correlation , and regression analysis were used for analysis. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. Overall, single individuals exhibit a moderately low level of parentification, a moderately high level of self-differentiation, and a moderately high level of intimacy. 2. Single men have higher levels of overall parentification, functional parentification, emotional parentification, and unfairness compared to single women. 3. Single men have higher levels of "I-position" than single women. 4. Single individuals currently in a relationship have higher levels of unfairness than those who have had past relationships. 5. Single individuals who have had past relationships have higher levels of emotional cutoff than those currently in a relationship. 6. Single individuals currently in a relationship have higher levels of intimacy than those who have had past relationships. 7. Parentification and self-differentiation in single individuals are moderately negatively correlated ; parentification and intimacy are moderately negatively correlated ; self-differentiation and intimacy are moderately positively correlated. 8. The variance in intimacy that can be explained by the unfairness and functionality dimensions of parentification is 22%. 9. The variance in intimacy that can be explained by the emotional cutoff, I-position, and fusion with others dimensions of self-differentiation is 26%. 10. Besides the direct relationship between parentification and intimacy, parentification also indirectly affects intimacy through self-differentiation. The variance in intimacy that can be explained by parentification and self-differentiation together is 22%. Based on the aforementioned findings, this study further provides suggestions for future research, and offers references for practitioners in their work.
