The choice of symbols is extremely important in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) service. Speech therapists and special educators select symbols usually based on their clinical judgement. Studies have shown that selecting symbols should consider many perspectives (e.g., iconicity and preference) simultaneously. However, the iconicity and preference of VoiceSymbol (VS), which was developed in Taiwan, and Picture Communication Symbols (PCS), which was used internationally, have not been studied. The current study was to investigate the differences of iconicity and preference among preschoolers and older adults. A total of 30 aged 3 to 5 years and 11months old preschoolers and 30 older adults aged above 65 years old were recruited. VS and PCS responded to the 12 frequently-used vocabulary words were used to investigate iconicity through indications among six choices and preference through indications between two choices. The results indicated that PCS was more iconic than VS perceived by the preschoolers without significant differences, whereas VS was more iconic than PCS perceived by the older adults with significant differences. Both preschoolers and older adults significantly preferred VS over PCS. The results have several academic and practical contributions, and research limitations and future research recommendations were discussed.
