The Second-Hand Economy of Japan and Its Implication to Taiwan: The Case of Hobby Industries

In an era of mass production and consumption, disposal of used items becomes an important issue. Used items can be sold as used products, recycled and turned into another item, or discarded as waste. Second-hand resale and recycling as an eco-friendly way to dispose of second-hand items own by ordinary people. Recycling relies on both ordinary people and government efforts. In the recycling process, even the technology of the enterprise is required. But if it was just resale, it would be much simpler for any ordinary person to resell used items through the internet, consignment stores and flea markets. The author will take animation figures (character models, dolls) as the research object, not only because it is one of the best-selling categories in the Japanese toy market, but also because the models are mainly made of plastic materials and a small amount of metal, which is not easy to decompose in the environment. In addition, the Japanese model developed a unique industry chain, including several specialty chains and the famous Akihabara area. This article will discuss the background and reasons behind Japan's unique second-hand figure industry chain, as a comparison of Taiwan's primary figure market and second-hand figure market. And try to explore whether cultural values can influence people's behavior between recycling, collecting or reselling.
