A Genghis Khan-themed exhibition was supposed to open in France in 2020, but was halted due to China’s censorship among certain terms, such as “Genghis Khan”, “Mongol”, and “Empire”. China and Mongolia have both applied and rejected the image of this legendary hero in each of their process of national development and the establishment of collective identity. The research therefore begins from the incident of the Genghis Khan exhibition and analyzes the motivations of the two states on controlling and applying the image of Genghis Khan in the past century. This thesis also attempts to discuss the impacts of the image on the relations between the two states, while both states have used the image to realize idiosyncratic political purposes. The research concludes through comparing the two states’ influences on the issue and proposing potential results of applying the image in current times. The thesis finds that the two states have their own respective interpretations of the historic hero; while in the same time they’ve avoided direct confrontation in order to maintain cordial and stable bilateral relations.
