Zanthoxylum wutaiense Chen (Rutaceae) is a prickle shrub, endemic in Taiwan and known only from Pintung County. In preliminary screening, the methanolic extract of the root wood showed antitubercular activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis 90-221387 in vitro. Investigation of the chloroform-soluble fraction of the root wood led to the isolation of fifty-three compounds. These compounds were identified as wutaiensyl methyl ether (1), demethoxywutaiensyl methyl methylether (2), methyl wutaiensate (3), methyl demethoxywutaiensate (4), wutaiensal (5), methyl 7-methoxyanodendroate (6), methyl 7-hydroxyanodendroate (7), 5-formyl-2-(2-hydroxyisopropyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (8), methyl anodendroate (9), 5-(3-hydroxypropyl)-7-methoxybenzofuran (10), 7-methoxywutaifuranol (11), wutaifuranol (12), methyl wutaifuranate (13), 7-methoxywutaifuranal (14), methyl 7-methoxybenzofuran-5-carboxylate (15), 7-methoxybenzofuran-5-carboxaldehyde (16), wutaipyranol (17), phebarudol (18), dictamnine (19), robustine (20), ??-fagarine (21), skimmianine (22), N-methylflindersine (23), atanine (24), rutaecarpine (25), 1-hydroxylrutaecarpine (26), umbelliferone (27), 3-[4-(3-methyl-2-butenyloxy)phenyl]-1-propanol (28), 3-[4-(3-methyl-but-2-enyloxy)phenyl]-acrylic acid methyl ester (29), methyl ferulate (30), valencic acid (31), 4-hydroxy-3-prenylbenzoic acid (32), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (33), vanillin (34), syringaldehyde (35), ligballinol (36), (-)-xanthoxylol (37), (-)-xanthoxylol-3,3-dimethylallyl ether (38), mixture of campesterol (39) and ??-sitosterol (40), mixture of campest-4-ene-3one (41) and ??-sitostenone (42), mixture of 3??-hydroxycampest-5-en-7-one (43) and 3??-hydroxystigmast-5-en-7-one (44), mixture of 6??-hydroxycampest-4-en-3-one (45) and 6??-hydroxystigmast-4-en-3-one (46), mixture of 6??-hydroxycampest-4-en-3-one (47) and 6??-hydroxystigmast-4-en-3-one (48), mixture of docosanoic acid (49), tricosanoic acid (50), pentacosanoic acid (51) and hexacosanoic acid (52), and eicosane (53) by spectral evidences or comparing with literature data. Among the isolates, 1∼3, 7, 11∼17 are new compounds. The antitubercular assay of the isolates is still under progress.
