Traditionally, human beings are social animals who thrive on the community’s acceptance for survival. However, in a rapidly developing society, humans tend to favor their personal interests over the surrounding social interactions. An individual who is isolated to the extreme edge of loneliness and despair cannot resist the dark forces that will gradually envelope the spirit. This thesis illustrates the solitude, loneliness, illusion, and death within both the relationship of a family as well as the individual perception. The animated creation illustrates the importance of the desire to be loved. Ironically, it is this simple desire that can eliminate solitude and tie the individual down to society. This hand-drawn animation, “The Silk of Solitude” reflects the meaning of visual vocabulary as well as the creator's experiences and emotions. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter describes the personal creative process and illustrates the author’s motivation. The second chapter explores related issues and works. Chapter three portrays the analysis of the symbolic visual language, the creative aesthetic, the process of creation, and the ultimate production of the animation. Finally, chapter four presents the overall conclusion on self reflection and future prospects of this work.
