Alternative Spaces first emerged in New York during the 1970s as part of a movement opposing the commercialization of art. These spaces provided artists and cultural creators with a platform to showcase avant-garde and experimental works. Typically created and managed by artists themselves, these spaces were free from commercial and institutional constraints, emphasizing artistic autonomy and experimentation, and fostering direct interaction between artists and audiences. The advent of alternative spaces not only challenged traditional art exhibition mechanisms but also broadened the boundaries of art, enabling greater public engagement and appreciation. In Taiwan, alternative spaces began to emerge in the late 1980s, serving as experimental venues for local artists seeking creative freedom. These spaces not only promoted artistic diversity and innovation but also had a profound impact on the regional cultural ecology. Through close interaction with local communities, alternative spaces have played an indispensable role in cultural promotion and community development, enriching Taiwan's artistic landscape and cultural diversity. This study explores the planning and management of composite alternative spaces in Taichung's West District, focusing on how these spaces balance economic pressures with cultural missions. As the demand for art and culture grows, composite alternative spaces are becoming key drivers of artistic innovation and cultural diversity. By analyzing multiple case studies of alternative spaces in Taichung, this research reveals their business models, branding strategies, and impacts on the local cultural ecology. The findings show that composite alternative spaces demonstrate significant advantages and potential in attracting audiences, maintaining core artistic values, and fostering local cultural development. Firstly, these spaces successfully attract diverse audiences through multifunctional design and flexible operational strategies, thereby expanding cultural influence. Secondly, they emphasize uniqueness and innovation in branding, integrating various functions such as art exhibitions, performances, retail, and dining, which not only enhance economic viability but also preserve core artistic and cultural values. Composite alternative spaces have found a balance between economics and culture, ensuring sustainable operation while providing new impetus for the development of art and culture. The results of this study offer valuable insights for future operators of alternative spaces and provide directions for subsequent research.
