This thesis focuses on the study of blues guitar, describing the history and development process of blues guitar. Blues music emerged in the late 19th century, and while the exact origins are now uncertain, it is generally believed to have originated in the Mississippi Delta region of the United States. Blues guitar, in particular, became a cornerstone in the later development of blues music. Since the evolution of blues music, numerous guitar heroes have emerged, contributing to the growth and prominence of blues music. Countless blues music compositions have been widely circulated with the invention, innovation, and succession of musical carriers. It not only created decades of the glorious era of blues, leading mainstream music, but also had a profound impact on subsequent music genres. Blues, beyond being a musical genre and form, tells the story of African Americans' journey from enslavement to liberation, from persecution to the pursuit of equality, and from the struggles of poverty to breaking down racial discrimination. The work songs sung by early African Americans who were enslaved in the cotton fields of the Delta in the late 19th century became the foundation of blues music. As the blues progressed along Route 61(commonly referred to as the Blues Highway)from the Delta northward to Chicago and then spread throughout the United States and the world, it also had a profound influence on Taiwanese popular music. Depending on different periods, such as the evolution from the Delta to the invention of the electric guitar, this paper empirically analyzes the music theory and structure of blues, including the techniques and styles of blues guitar playing, the diverse sounds created by blues instruments(slide guitar, resonator guitar, steel-string guitar, etc.), the influence of blues music on other genres such as reggae, jazz, rock, soul, and more. The thesis also explores the impact of blues music on Taiwanese popular music and the role of blues guitar in Taiwanese popular music. It delves into how blues performers(guitarists)in Taiwan are inspired by blues music, and how blues elements are integrated into Taiwanese popular music, showcasing the rich diversity and cultural value of blues guitar.
