Co-opetition Within the Global Zinc Industry’s Circular Economy - A Case Study of Diamonchem International Co., Ltd.

As the global population grows, the demand for raw materials intensifies, drawing significant attention to circular economy and sustainability from industries, academia, and policymakers. Businesses face challenges such as resource depletion, material cost fluctuations, stringent government regulations, and increasing consumer demands for transparency and sustainability. One effective strategy to address these issues is adopting circular economy principles, which involve designing products for longevity, encouraging reuse and repair, ensuring recyclability, optimizing resource and energy efficiency, and prioritizing sustainable sourcing. This approach not only mitigates resource depletion risks but also fosters innovation and provides competitive advantages. This study investigates the role of "co-opetition"—strategic collaboration among competitors—in promoting a circular economy within the zinc industry. By integrating circular economy principles, companies can reduce reliance on finite resources, stabilize material costs, and meet regulatory and consumer expectations. The study employs a qualitative research approach, including a comprehensive literature review and expert interviews, to explore how waste and by-products from one sector can serve as resources for another. This creates a sustainable industrial ecosystem, where companies can turn waste into valuable raw materials. The findings highlight the importance of co-opetition in advancing the circular economy, demonstrating that cross-sector collaboration can help companies address challenges like resource scarcity and regulatory compliance. Through complimentory strategy, by sharing knowledge and resources, companies can optimize resource use, manage environmental impacts, and create new business opportunities. This research contributes to the literature on co-opetition and circular economy by providing empirical evidence supporting the development of circular economy models. It also offers practical insights for practitioners on implementing co-opetition strategies to maximize resource efficiency and achieve sustainability goals. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) related to sustainable industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
