The main purpose of this study is to explore Erich Fromm’s theories of loving and its implication for education. The research method of this thesis is mainly philosophical hermeneutics. Firstly, this thesis studies Fromm’s life and its historical context in order to know the background of his thoughts. Secondly, this thesis looks into Fromm’s analysis of human existence conditions, for the purpose of understanding the relationship between human existence conditions and love. Thirdly, this thesis understands the core of Fromm’s theories of loving, describes his observation of contemporary society, and examines his ideas of loving and principles of practicing loving. Fourthly, this thesis investigates the implication of Fromm’s theories of loving for education, and reaches the following conclusions: 1. To cultivate the students’ capacity to love. 2. To set a model of loving to students. 3.To create educational environments which encourages the practice of loving.
