Following the social movements in Hong Kong in 2014 and 2019, a significant wave of emigration emerged in 2020, with Taiwan becoming one of the main destinations. Can Hongkongers adapt to life in Taiwan, or will cultural conflicts arise? As food is an essential part of daily life and closely tied to human existence, this study uses food as its central theme to explore the migration wave and identity issues caused by Hong Kong’s social movements since 2014, expressed through the postmodern-inspired style of New Literati Painting. This research adopts an interdisciplinary approach to investigate issues related to Hong Kong’s social movements and identity. It also examines the evolution of Literati Painting since Dong Qichang’s establishment of the style in the Ming Dynasty, explores the emergence of New Literati Painting, and analyzes its techniques of expression. By employing stylistic analysis, this study evaluates the works of various New Literati painters and highlights how postmodernism has influenced this genre. Through an understanding of Hong Kong’s social movements, migration wave, and identity issues, as well as an analysis of the spirit and characteristics of New Literati Painting, this research aims to delve into the meanings of food culture in both Hong Kong and Taiwan. As someone who has left Hong Kong, the author creates the Food as Heaven series to document the emotional journey of displacement. Using food as a relatable and accessible subject, the series incorporates painting, calligraphy, and seals in the style of New Literati Painting to explore the contrasts, integrations, and identity issues experienced after two years of living in Taiwan.
