Out of the Dark Kingdom: Oral History of Chi Chia-wei and Taiwan’s LGBTQ+ Movement

This thesis aims to explore the use of oral history as a method to assist in the historical documentation of Taiwan's LGBTQ+ movement, attempting to break through the tradi-tional narrative framework centered on group-based social movements. Conventional nar-ratives of Taiwan's LGBTQ+ movement history often take prominent organizations or teams as their starting point, focusing on organized actions and protest history. Existing research on Taiwan's LGBTQ+ movement history generally adopts this group-centric ap-proach, which tends to overlook the efforts of individuals who challenged systemic struc-tures in the early stages. While the group-focused narrative of the LGBTQ+ movement has significant importance and preserves critical chapters in the development of Taiwan's LGBTQ+ movement, this type of historical writing may neglect the contributions of individuals who advanced LGBTQ+ rights and challenged the boundaries of heteronormative dominance. By adopt-ing a personalized perspective on LGBTQ+ activism, documenting the historical engage-ment of individuals (both LGBTQ+ and allies) in gender politics, and retrospectively ac-knowledging pre-martial law efforts to challenge institutional structures, we can achieve a more comprehensive account of Taiwan's LGBTQ+ movement history. Future research-ers will need to uncover additional historical materials or utilize oral history methods to break through the "thirty-year" narrative framework of the LGBTQ+ movement. This thesis centers on the life history of Mr. Chi Chia-Wei, reexamining Taiwan's LGBTQ+ movement history from an individual perspective, exploring its possibilities and contributions, and preserving the oral interview transcripts of Mr. Chi Chia-Wei. The au-thor identifies three key research dimensions of Mr. Chi Chia-Wei 's oral history: (1) LGBTQ+ gender experiences before the lifting of martial law, (2) the historical construc-tion of HIV/AIDS prevention, and (3) the journey of emerging from the "kingdom of darkness." Mr. Chi Chia-Wei 's oral accounts reveal a journey from solitary confrontation in the darkness to collective anticipation of dawn. His experiences hold significant mean-ing and value for the writing of LGBTQ+ movement history, marking the pursuit of LGBTQ+ human rights across eras before and after the lifting of martial law.
