Baroque, from Portuguese Barroco, referred to deformed pearls, and then evolved into a label of distorted and complex visual art style. This paper will verify and analyze if there is genuine baroque building in Taiwan. There are varied historical foreign-style buildings, reported and commented often in different mediae, all over this island. Since my master, Prof. Wang casually in his classes mentioned that there is no real Baroque Style in Taiwan. After studying history of Western architecture, I feel it’s worth digging into this issue. During my studies, I understood that most of the Western Style building in Taiwan were introduced from West during the Japanese Occupation. Those architects were trained in England from which they knew Victorian Style ─ a sort of Historical Eclecticism. Therefore, we often encounter a Western Style edifice with red bricks and white fringe. It’s hard for us to link these features with baroque elements. This thesis will focus on analyzing the form and plan in order to confirm whether it is Baroque Style or not.
