The foundationof men's decathlon in Taiwan can be traced back to the Japanese colonial era. Enteringthe post-war period, talented athletes such as Yang, Chuan-kwang, Wu, Ah-Min,Gu Jin-shui, and Lee, Fu-An emerged, excelling in international competitionsand achieving remarkable results. Their accomplishments have earned Taiwan the name‘the kingdom of decathlon’. While Taiwanese athletes have shown relativelymodest performances in the decathlon in recent years, the new generationscontinue to exert considerable effort, aiming to challenge themselves andcompete at the international level. This study employs historical researchmethods, gathering official documents, publications, newspapers, and magazinesrelated to decathlon for further investigations. The main focus of this studyrevolves around three periods: the introduction of the decathlon to Taiwan, theestablishment of Taiwan as the kingdom of decathlon in Asia, and the dream of rebuildingthe kingdom of decathlon. Through this investigation, the development andhistorical trajectory of men's decathlon in Taiwan are explored. The studyresults show that: 1. The introduction of the decathlon to Taiwan: In 1920,Chen, Chi-Chuan, who studied in Japan at the time, became the first Taiwaneseto participate in the sport of decathlon (all-round). In 1922, Taiwan startedorganizing track and field competitions, marking the spread of the sport to theisland. The results and records of the athletic all round can also be foundsince this period of Taiwan. After the war, with the hosting of the ‘1st TaiwanProvincial Games’, decathlon began to take root in Taiwan. 2.The establishmentof Taiwan as the kingdom of decathlon in Asia: In 1960, Asian Ironman Yang,Chuan-Guang won the silver medal in the decathlon at the Rome Olympics, markingTaiwan's first Olympic medal. In 1966, Wu A-Min won a gold medal at the 5thBangkok Asian Games, and in 1970, Wang, Ying-Shi secured third place at the 6thBangkok Asian Games. Taiwan gained the reputation of the ‘kingdom of decathlon’with these outstanding performances in this sport. 3. The dream of rebuildingthe kingdom of decathlon: In the 1980s, the rivalry between Gu, Jin-Shui and Lee,Fu-An became legendary. They both represented Taiwan in various internationalcompetitions and achieved remarkable results, also stood on the Olympic stagetwice and won a silver medal at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. Additionally, the‘Little Ironman’ Peng Huan-shu achieved the honor of three consecutivevictories in the decathlon at the Taiwan Area Games. Although Taiwan'sdecathlon performances may not be as dominant in international competitionsnowadays, emerging talents like Wang, Chen-Yu and Cho, Jia-Hsuan continue tostrive for excellence at the Asian Games, fostering hopes for the resurgence ofTaiwan as the kingdom of decathlon.
