The goals of this study are to investigate the U.S. tire tread patents owned by the five major tire manufacturers, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin, Pirelli and Continental, to identify the advantages of the tire treads of each of the major manufactures, and to compare the Taiwan-based manufacturers to the major ones. The results show that the Bridgestone and the Goodyear have more patents than others. The major two technical issues of utility patents are lateral groove and groove wall direction. The effects emphasized by those utility patents are traction, drainage, even wear, steering stability and noise control. Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. is the only Taiwan company which owns U.S. tire tread patents. 14 design patents owned by Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. are found. The patents show no different effects compared to the five major manufacturers. The main effects of its patents are traction, drainage and steering stability. Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. has no patents about groove wall direction and notch, one of the most important aspects of tire treads. The author suggests that Taiwan companies carry out more researches in these domains.
