This creative research explores the application of subtractive design theory in mascot creation, using Western famous paintings as the thematic focus. The phenomenon of poorly designed mascots in Taiwan in 2021, contrasted with the influence of Japan's Kumamon in 2013, prompts an examination of the fundamental differences between the two and the characteristics, elements, and essence of Kumamon influenced by subtractive design. Through research and analysis, this study aims to shift current thinking on mascot design The methodology includes text analysis, questionnaires, focus groups, literature analysis, and inductive reasoning. Group analysis of Japanese regional mascots, supported by semiotics and analysis of form, color, and texture, leads to conclusions about the characteristics of Japanese mascots. The core principles of subtractive design theory are integrated through literature review and analysis. Group discussions enhance the objectivity of the design process, supported by kewpie doll theory and imitation theory. The culmination of this research is the creation of a series of mascot designs themed around Western famous paintings, which are exhibited and evaluated through feedback questionnaires. The study concludes that the core of subtractive design focuses on the essence of the designed object, boldly eliminating unnecessary and non-essential elements, resulting in a more concise and clear design method. Analysis of Japanese mascots reveals that they typically feature 2-3 characteristic symbols, aligning closely with the concept of subtractive design. Feedback from questionnaires shows that 64.2% of respondents have a favorable view of applying subtractive design to mascot creation, perceiving the presence of simplicity and subtractive design elements. Therefore, it can be concluded that subtractive design can help designers approach mascot creation from a different perspective and be widely accepted by the general public. By systematically analyzing, selecting, thinking, simplifying, and combining elements, subtractive design can be considered a viable design method for mascot creation.
