The demographic change in Taiwan has led to a gradual decline in the proportion of traditional households and an increase in that of single tenants. Compared with other household environments, the living space and lifestyle of rented studios are unique. To live comfortably in a limited space surrounding their rented studio, single tenants are willing to purchase additional furniture to meet their needs and lifestyles. In the living space, furniture is used as its main space separation and partition. Research on the related topic is hardly seen in literature, therefore, this research observes and analyzes the preference and needs of additional furniture for single tenants and discusses the issue of spatial integration. This research focuses on the lifestyle of the single-rented studio and explores the relationships regarding lifestyle, space and furniture, and the derived needs. The qualitative research approach is used to provide in-depth observation and analysis of the single tenant's lifestyle and space through Activity Analysis, Personal Inventory, and Behavioral Archaeology proposed by IDEO. The demand-oriented analysis results are sorted and classified as the lifestyles of single tenants, and innovative furniture designs are proposed. Moreover, suggestions for future single-rented studio space planning and furniture design are discussed. The results revealed that in the limited single-rented studio space, the division of functional areas is formalized, and related to the function and use behavior of furniture. To make the space division flexible, it needs to be matched with multi-functional furniture. This study classifies the furniture requirements of the single-rented studio and defines major spatial divisions: rest, entertainment, environment, dress-up, storage, and catering. In summary, this research also proposes multi-functional furniture designs that respond to flexible spatial arrangements for the single-rented studio.
