Abstract As the elderly population continues to grow, achieving healthy aging in recent years has become a goal to strive for in Taiwan. Besides experiencing physical declines, elderly people in the aging process deal with considerable psychological impact of life adaptation, resulting in increased anxiety and stress, decreased in happiness, which if not addressed in time may cause serious psychological disorders. Previous research have found that creative arts such as mandala coloring have positive impact on mental health. Pastel Nagomi Art, recently introduced to Taiwan from Japan, in many aspects is similar to mandala coloring. The objective of this study is to ascertain the effect of Pastel Naomi Art creativities on anxiety, stress, and happiness in middle-aged and elderly people. This research is divided in two phases; the first phase of this study consisted of recruiting 42 middle-aged and elderly, and randomly assign them to three groups (freestyle painting, mandala coloring, and Pastel Nagomi Art painting). After anxiety induction procedure, differences in anxiety reduction among these three creative painting groups were compared. The second phase consisted of recruiting 20 middle-aged and elderly to participate in a long-term (9 weeks) Pastel Nagomi Art creativity experiment. The result of Phase one study indicates that freestyle painting, mandala coloring, and Pastel Nagomi Art all have significant effects in reducing anxiety, and Pastel Naomi Art was found to have the greatest impact. The result of Phase 2 research shows that Pastel Nagomi Art painting significantly decreases anxiety and stress levels, and increases happiness for middle-aged and elderly people. Those participants identified as having「severe anxiety」, 「low happiness level」and「severe stress」 have greater significant improvements after engaging in Pastel Nagomi Art creation. Furthermore, creating Pastel Naomi Art has significant effects on heart rate and blood pressure. In sum, Pastel Nagomi Art has positive effects on middle-aged and elderly people’s body and mind, and can be used as one of the leisure activities to improve the body and mind of the middle-aged and elderly in the future.
