"Amulet" is a protective charm that carried with you for bringing good luck and blessings, as well as keeping the bad things and demon away. At the same time, it is also the purpose of guarding a specific unit such as family, company, etc. Thus it is called "Home-guarding Charm" In ancient times, people couldn’t control the power from the nature, and they didn’t have enough understanding about it. Also, their lives were threatened by the beasts. Due to these reasons, they started to conductnature worship. After then, they began to deify any things or phenomena that related to the nature and the universe. Over time, from worship to dependence, people hoped the power of the gods they worshiped could be formed as a body protection. The original "amulet" was produced then. Since then, witch doctor, yin and yang ideology, yin and yang of the five elements, yin and yang road, and so on had debut. Buddhism was introduced into China about 2600 years ago. Later on, Japanese envoys sent to China during the Sui and the Tang Dynasty had brought Buddhism and Taoism into Japan. Buddhism in Japan, Taiwan and China are all foreign religions. Once a foreign religion is accepted in one country, it would be integrated with its original religion(s) , and then evolved into a type of localized religion. Japan and Taiwan have both inherited the Taoist ideology from China. Under the influence of the historical changes and the passage of times, Taoism needed to be localized in order to adapt the local customs and the heritages. This thesis will focus on the origin, basis, evolution, and production process and promulgation of the amulet culture in Japan and Taiwan.
