Zearalenone is a special biological toxin that has estrogen-like effects. The toxin can cause animals’ miscarriage, stillbirth, abnormal reproductive function, decreased growth, immune suppression, infertility, and malformations. The toxin affects the reproductive performance by influencing the body, causing apoptosis, teratogenicity, DNA damage, oxidative damage, immune function and other mechanisms to affect animal and human health. This research collected grains and animal feeds from areas in Asia (a total of eight countries: Vietnam, China, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea), and performed analyses for zearalenone content. Total number of tests was 612. Test results showed the detection rates of these regions were: Vietnam 80%, Taiwan 38%, Malaysia 20%, Thailand 7%, Philippines 35%, Korea 47 %, Japan 53 % and China 59%. These statistics revealed the importance of monitoring this mycotoxin for reducing the health risks for animals and human.
