The purpose of this study is to create a modern picture book about “Genesis”, based on early Christian religious paintings related to “Genesis” in European churches. The researcher, who is deeply influenced by Christianity, also is a kindergarten’s teacher, finds that the story is relatively useful for children's cognitive development through the aid of images. However, with the change of time, the presentation of images and narratives has changed. This study uses a practice-based research method to compare the graphic contents of past and contemporary “Genesis” stories. The study begins with a review of “Genesis” paintings and short story texts to explore how iconography has influenced contemporary children's picture books. Then, the action research study was conducted to observe preschool children's reactions to the “Genesis” picture books, and the results were applied to this study's creation of picture book, “Do You Know?”. The format of this picture book uses woodblock printmaking’s technique as a medium, exploring printmaking’s technique and textures, and be practiced in the study of the picture book “Do You Know?”. In the end, the results of the research show that the meaning of images in the past can be expressed in modern picture books, which can help children to understand the story through images,to have cognition and repeat the story by their memory. At the same time, the past image’s representations of “Genesis” can still be applied to the topics for modern children, which is in line with the curriculum; however, through the action research study, the author has adjusted the story and images of the picture book “Do You Know?” and extended reference for the future’s creative works.
