The Study for the effects of children’s electronic readings

Facing the approaching of e-reading era, reading exists in every aspect of our life. It is pervasive now to use e-reader for e-reading. This thesis studies the reading behaviors of children via e-readers and explores the reading effect, experience, and satisfaction of the e-readers. Therefore, this paper adopts documentary analysis, experimentation, and questionnaires for study. The questionnaires are in the way of “Ask and Answer.” The reading experience survey is for the questionnaires of the first phase and the reading effect and reading attitude questionnaires are for the second phase. Moreover, they are grouped as “Print Books vs. flash page flip e-Books,” and “Print Books vs. Web e-Books.” The study shows that: A. Nowadays, the digital publishing development is much slower than western countries, so the market in Taiwan is relatively small. To meet the supply-demand balance between the industry and the consumer, the industry has to not only invest more proactively to the digital market, but also integrate top resources and use the digital convenience to provide multiple services to attract potential consumers. B. The interactive effect between “the print book and the reader” and “the e-book and the Reader: On the perspective of words interpretation, the average effect rates of audience who use the e-book are higher than those who use the print book. On the perspective of inference interpretation, the average effect rates of audience who use the e-book are higher than those who use the print book. On the perspective of judgment application, the print books are better than the e-books. However, on the performance of graphical memory, the e-book is much better than the print book in the “print books vs. flash page flip e-books group.” And in the group of the print book and the web e-book, the print book is better than the e-book. C. Different information carriers’ influence to audience’ attitude: Generally speaking, the satisfaction survey shows that the participants are more satisfied with the e-book’s graphic visibility. On the legibility perspective, the e-book is more satisfying than the print book. On the perspective of accessibility, participants of e-book find it easier to use e-book, and male participants find print books more accessible. When accompanied by adults, the preference for e-books is much higher than when the kids are alone. To conclude, the daily reading frequency, the reading habits, the digital device using experience, and the interactions between parents and children all lead to the change of e-book participants’ choice of media and intention.
