This thesis utilizes historical criticism, literary criticism, and theological hermeneutics to explore the theological themes of the book of Habakkuk. I try to demonstrate that “כָּבוֹד of Yahweh” is critical to the understanding of the book of Habakkuk. The book of Habakkuk is dated to the end of Judah (609 B.C.E.–587 B.C.E.). During this period of time, a prevalent ideology existed in the ancient Near East that the vicissitude of that nation was strongly tied to the power of the national god. This ideology affected Judah’s society to some extent, and in turn affected the people’s perception of Yahweh at the time of Jerusalem’s crisis. Through the dialogue and interaction between Habakkuk and Yahweh, the people of Judah realized that the sovereignty of Yahweh is NOT bound to the prosperity of Judah. I propose that prophet Habakkuk indicates the separation of Judah and Yahweh with the phrase “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the כָּבוֹד of Yahweh.” With the phrase, he also expresses the immanence of Yahweh, as well as judgment and salvation it brings about. This concept originated from the journey of exodus, developed by the prophet Isaiah, inherited by the prophet Habakkuk, and passed on to the prophet Ezekiel. Through מַשָּא of Yahweh, Habakkuk reminded Judah that the sovereignty of Yahweh will never be threatened by His creation. Those people who belonged to Yahweh will experience the presence of Yahweh amidst the storm of judgment, and in the hope of salvation, they will have peace and power beyond perception. Keywords: the book of Habakkuk, prophet, the glory of Yahweh, genre of מַשָּא , prophecy.
