The Cell Biology ofTooth Enamel Development

(Taiwan J Pediatr Dent 3(1): 1-12, 2003)

The epithelium, derived from the oral ectoderm, forms the enamel organ of the tooth which secretes the enamel matrix. Growth factor-mediated signaling has been implicated in the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during early tooth development. Moreover, the msh-like homeobox genes – Msx1 and Msx2, as putative transcription factors, are also in response to express in the developing tooth. During the condensation process, the mesenchyme becomes capable of inducing tooth formation. A series of cytological differentiation of ameloblasts, including the structural features of tight junction in premeloblasts, the secretory function of secretory ameloblasts, and proton-pump activity in maturation ameloblasts is considered to be closely associated with highly crystallized enamel-formation ultrastructure. The amelogenin gene is expressed only during the secretion stage of amelogenesis. (Taiwan J Pediatr Dent 3(1): 1-12, 2003)
