Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is diagnosed when characteristic facial dysmorphology, growth restriction, and central nervous system/neurodevelopmental abnormalities are present with confirmed prenatal alcohol exposure. FASD is the main cause of birth defects, growth restriction, and mental retardation in the industrialized countries. The reported prevalence of the disorder approximately reaches to 1% of live birth However, FASD is preventable compared to other infant deformities. This report summarized the fetal alcohol terminology, prevalence, identification, effects on face and other organs, and prevention of exposure.
