Mental Space: A Potential Primary Space for Infections Spread from Lower Anterior Teeth

摘要
頦間隙係指下顎頦部的前方區域，上方以頦肌及唇黏膜為界，前方為頦肌，下方為頦部皮膚。若下顎前齒根尖感染位於頦肌齒槽骨附著的下方，則感染容易蔓延至頦間隙。頦間隙及頦下間隙常常被混淆不清，事實上，這是兩個解剖學上完全不重疊的區域，不單是兩者的感染來源，常常不同，發生感染時，這兩個間隙的臨床徵象及外科處理方式亦不同。

The mental space lies on the external surface of the mentum. It is bound superiorly by the mentalis muscle and the overlying mucosa, anteriorly by the mentalis muscle, and inferiorly by the skin of the chin. When infection from the lower anterior teeth erodes through the labial plate below the origin of the mentalis muscle, the mental space is involved. Many textbooks tended to overlook this space and designated a submental space infection in such circumstances. When the mental space is infected, there is a swelling of the chin, mimicking a protruding chin or a long chin. This is different from the submental space infection, which produces a lump on the upper neck. Abscess of the mental space is usually drained through the vestibule next to the lower incisors. Spread of infection from mental space to submental space seems to be unusual.
