Purpose: To investigate the clinical behavior of oral mucocele, and the outcome of different treatment methods, such as excision and laser vaporization. Material and method: The study collected 246 OPD patients with pathologic report of oral mucocele in department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung medical university from 1999 January to 2003 December. The data included gender, age, site, size, treatment methods, recurrence and complications. Results: The most common site of mucocele was lower lip (76.02%), and the size less than or equal with 1cm accounted for 89.02%. Most patients in young group were under 30 years old and accounted for 65.04%. There was no significant difference between the genders. The recurrence of lesions on the mouth floor had statistical significance (P<0.05). There were no interacted effect among the factors of recurrence, such as size, site and treatment method. Conclusion: The study provided the clinical data of oral mucocele, and recommend the laser vaporization is a safe and convenient method for oral mucocele, especially for young age and poor compliant patient.
