According to Chinese ancient agrostology books, wulingzhi, a kind of common Chinese medicinal material, is the droppings of hanhaochong (also known as hedan bird). In the present day, wulingzhi in the traditional Chinese medicine is the excrement of flying squirrels. Is hanhaochong a kind of bird or a kind of squirrel? After studying the Chinese ancient literatures about hanhaochong and flying squirrel, the results showed that the wulingzhi in the ancient days is different from the excrement of flying squirrels used in present Chinese material medica.
