Anemia is frequently encountered among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The most common etiologies are iron deficiency and erythropoietin (EPO) insufficiency. Chronic anemia can result in left ventricular hypertrophy, deteriorating renal function and increased mortality. With appropriate treatment by iron and EPO, anemia in CKD patients could be corrected and the general well-being of the patients would be improved. It is mandatory to rule out other common etiologies of anemia before initiating treatment to ensure the effectiveness of therapy.
