Home hemodialysis began in 1960s in Seattle. Because home hemodialysis is cheaper than center hemodialysis, almost all charity chose home hemodialysis in order to support more patients with limited funding. In 1974, Medicare began to support center hemodialysis which resulted in the withdrawal of home hemodialysis. On July 15, 2019, an executive order (Advancing American Kidney Health) from President Donald Trump pushed for more end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients to have transplantion or be on home dialysis by 2025, which may encourage more home hemodialysis in future.
