Secondary hyperparathyroidism, a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease, can lead to renal osteodystrophy and cardiovascular complications. Treatment options include a low-phosphorus diet, the use of phosphate-binding agents to manage elevated blood phosphorus levels, supplementation of active vitamin D, and the administration of calcimimetic agents. If medical treatment proves ineffective, surgical removal of the parathyroid glands can be considered to address refractory secondary hyperparathyroidism.
