Jisheng is one of the most commonly used Chinese medicines since ancient China. It was first described in ”Shen-Nong Ben-Tsao Jing”, called ”Shang Jisheng” which was classified into the top Chinese medicine. In Taiwan trade market Taxillus liquidambaricolus (Hayata.) Hosokawa (TL) and Viscuin colortuni (Kom.) Nakai (VC) were used as the Jisheng in the prescription. ”Ben Jing” and ”Yao Dian” described the Jisheng can treat rheumatism, disease of liver or kidney, upset at gestation and hypertension. In folk therapy, Jisheng is usually to treat hepatitis. ”Compendium of Materia Medica” also described that the Jisheng can nourish the liver and kidney. Therefore, it can reasonably be proposed that the Jisheng should have the effects to protect the liver and kidney. This research takes things out to verify its effect of scavenging the free radical with Chemiluminese Analyzer to TL and YC. To further evaluating the nourishing effects of Jisheng on the liver and kidney, both methanol-extracted TL and YC were used in the present study to treat alcohol (Et-OH)-induced damages of the rat liver and kidney. From the biochemical and pharmacological results, both the TL and YC extracts have the protection effects on the liver and kidney. Pathological results also revealed that both the extracts could decrease the Et-OH-induced liver inflammation, stagnant blood and necrosis. These results are in consistent with the biochemical indexes of serum. The function of dispelling the free radical [H2O2] is one of the mechanisms that Jisheng possessed protecting the liver and kidney.
