From 1990 to 1993, six advanced oral cavity cancer patients with mandibular involvement were treated in the Department of Otolaryngology, Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Canter. After composite resection of the tumor including segmental resection of the mandible, mandibular reconstruction plate was used to reconstruct the mandible immediately. The cosmetic and functional results were rather satisfactory, no major complication even after postoperative radiotherapy. After follow-up without evidence of local recurrence, 2 patients received second stage reconstruction of the mandible using free vascularized fibular flap. The advantages of mandibular reconstruction plate are shortened operation time, one staged reconstruction by the otolaryngologist alone and providing good soft tissue condition for second stage autologous bone graft, so the successful rate will be higher.
