In the field of Otolaryngology, CO2 laser has been proven to be an effective tool in the treatment of various lesions. Nd-YAG laser is also recommended by some surgeons. For the comparative convenience between CO2 laser and Nd-YAG laser, our studies were designed to: 1)observe and compare the differences of healing process of the rat tongue wounds which were made by the scalpel, CO2 laser and Nd-YAG laser. 2)compare the healing rate of the tongue wounds by Nd-YAG laser and CO2 laser. 3)evaluate the inflammatory cell numbers during the healing process of wounds which were made by these 3 tools. The rats were sacrified at the same inter-val and the histological examinations were carried out. Seventy-two adult male Sprque-Dawley rats were grouped into two categories: 1)rats with scalpel incision on one side and CO2 laser on the other side of the tongue; 2)rats with the tongue incisions by using CO2 laser and Nd-YAG laser respecitively. The rats were sacrified on 2nd hr, 2nd, 7th, 11th, 14th and 28th days after surgery. The histological and electromicrosco-pical examinations to evaluate the wound healing of the rat tongues were performed. Comparing the effects of these 3 methods with each other, we found that scalpel wound had the most rapid healing process, CO2 laser incision got relatively less blood loss and Nd-YAG resulted in the most extensive tissue damage which was usually reversible.
