This paper introduces recent Japanese research into the history of the Mongol period with a focus on the Yuan dynasty's rule of China and its cultural policies. Recent Japanese research into the history of this period has tended to paint a picture of a pan-Eurasian empire, treating the emergence of the Mongol Empire as an epoch-making occurrence in world history. This paper examines representative research into regional government through the cultural policies and imperial edicts of the Yuan dynasty; which ruled an area centered in China at the peak of the Mongol Empire; as well as its publishing efforts.
