兩岸的經貿交流,離不開政治與「一中原則」,而「一中原則」已成為發展兩岸關係中一個無法被人忽略的事實。兩岸經貿交流不會增加民眾對大陸的認同,「一中原則」使兩岸經貿往來發展仍存相當多障礙,遑論透過兩岸經貿縮短兩岸統合的可能期程,這點似乎是想像的美好。海內外同胞的文化認同就是對中華文化的認同,兩岸青年的中華文化認同對推動祖國和平統一具有重要作用。結合文化認同及中華民族豐厚的軟權力資源,通過族源認同促進和鞏固統一,可能是較適合的新途徑。文化是一個民族產生和發展最穩定的因素,也是最重要的凝聚力,但文化認同不等於民族認同。如何進一步促成兩岸之間的合作與交流,提升兩岸人民之間的相互認識和理解,首先必須先轉變臺灣民眾對大陸的預設感知與意象。通過大眾媒介進行文化傳播,傳遞經驗與想法,對於轉變臺灣民眾對大陸的感知與意象是不錯的方式與工具,若從文化認同視角來看,更是重構身分認同的最佳利器。
